ho knew him, Sir Dewan Chand.
There was a time in 1943, when HH Shri Bhola Nathji was going out for a walk around Camel's Back Road in Mussoorie, when he met a philosopher from Lahore, w
After the preliminary greetings, the man said to HH Shri Nathji:
"Sire! I feel that life is like a bird in a cage! Do you ever feel that way yourself?"
HH Shri Nathji, who seldom contradicted people out of his sheer gentleness and politeness, replied:
"Yes, Sir Dewan Chand! I, too, feel like that way! But my position is like that of a bird in a cage who is singing:
"Jee kafas men lag gayaa apnaa chaman se bhee sivaa
Hamko ai sayyaad parvaaye rihaayi kyaa rahi
"The Cage has captivated my heart more than the garden,
O Hunter! what care I for freedom now!"
"The Hunter was surprised to see the bird sing with happiness. He had seen it miserable and fluttering its wings only days before.
"He opened the door of the cage so that the bird could fly out, but the bird refused to leave the cage!
"Na tezeeye sar-sar hai na sayyaad kameen men,
Goshe men kafas ke mujhe aaraam bahut hai!
"There is neither a wind in storm nor a hunter with arrow drawn,
In the corner of the cage I have found real happiness!"
"So it is with man. When he finds himself encaged in the circumstances that surround him,and the more he flutters his wings to escape from the cage the more he hurts himself, then he reconciles himself to all that surrounds him.
"Nay, he even begins to love his plight in the cage as a gift from God!".
"And so great is the power of Love that it turns the misery surrounding him into happiness."
