There was a time in the early 1940's when HH Shri Nathji was going for
an early morning walk in the city of Lahore in Punjab, India, when a car
came close to the pavement and stopped next to him.
It was Rai Bahadur Sant Ram, a Chief Engineer of some fame in the city of Lahore at that time, when Lahore was part of India.
Shri Sant Ram requested Shri Nathji to grace his car and began to take Shri Nathji for a ride in his car.
He asked Shri Nathji on an impulse: "Sire! Can you tell me of an easy way of reaching God?"
Shri Nathji laughed and said: "Chief Engineer Sahib! Tell me how long did it take you to become a Chief Engineer?"
The Chief Engineer replied: "Oh, about 35 years I would say!"
And Shri Nathji said: "It took you 35 years of your life to become a Chief Engineer and you are asking me how to reach God during the brief ride in this car?"
Then Shri Nathji added: "Go and knock at His Door!"
The Chief Engineer said: "Sire, will I have to go on knocking forever, or will the door ever open?"
Shri Nathji laughed again and said: "Chief Engineer Sahib! I am beginning to doubt whether you are a Chief Engineer or not!"
Chief Engineer: "Sire! What has engineering got to do with it?"
Shri Nathji said: "Listen, Chief Engineer Sahib! If the door were never to open there would have been a wall in its place!"
He continued:" Stand at his door and go on knocking! It will surely open one day! Since it has opened for so many others it will surely open for you as well!!"
He added: "Go on sittting there at His doorstep! If He does not come out, you make sure you don't move from there until He does!"
Indeed people spend their entire lifetimes in worldly pursuits trying to acquire what they want, and yet make God simply a topic of discussion for their leisure.
Indeed when intense efforts are made to attain worldly goals, surely a great effort will be needed to attain God, who is the greatest and most valuable Goal of life.
