 THE ATHEIST AND THE EARTHQUAKE

From the memoirs of my father, HH Shri Bhola Nathji, Great Spiritual Luminary, whose Words and Divine Presence still guide us and help us from his Celestial Abode in the Heavens from where he had come for the salvation of mankind.

Although this memoir speaks of an atheist specifically, the fact remains that many believers too are like atheists. Such believers fear the world but they do not fear God who is there to protect them.

HH Shri Bhola Nathji was in the hills in the 1930's walking on the Mall Road with his favourite devotee, Mr. R.R. Khanna, who was an M.Sc. in Physics and the Registrar of the famous Lucknow University in North India.

As they walked along the road, RR Khanna said to Shri Nathji:

"Maharaj! Honored Sire! There is the house in which Mr. Paranjpaye, my boss, the Vice Chancellor of the Lucknow University, is vacationing here in the hills these days.

"I hear he is ill. Can you be good enough to accompany me to his house to bless him to recover from his illness?"

HH Shri Bhola Nathji who was the humblest person on the planet earth could not refuse and went with Khanna to the Vice Chancellor's house, where he lay ill in bed.

Even as Shri Bhola Nathji blessed him to get well soon, the Vice Chancellor, being an atheist, made a sarcastic remark :

" I do not need God's Blessings to become well. My medicines and doctors are enough."

Many days later after the Vice Chancellor had returned to his home town at Lucknow, a terrible earthquake rocked the city.

Khanna related the events to Shri Bhola Nathji:

"Maharaj! Do you know what happened when the earthquake hit the city? Paranjpye ran out of his house in panic, shouting:

'GOOD GOD!' "

Shri Bhola Nathji laughed and said:

"THE GOOD GOD WAS ALREADY WITHIN HIM. IT TOOK THE ROCKING OF AN EARTHQUAKE TO BRING HIM OUT!"

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS THAT A PERSON SHOULD NOT WAIT FOR A CALAMITY TO HIT HIM BEFORE HE BOWS DOWN BEFORE GOD COMPLETELY.
