DAY OF FREEDOM

 DAY OF FREEDOM

=================================================
Today on the 15th of August 1947, India got its freedom from the British Raj. It was a day when the entire country rejoiced, it was the day of the country's "tryst with destiny".
For me, it was a very special day. It was the Birthday of my Mother, Smt. Savitri Devi,also known as Mahamateshwari. She was born on the 15th of August 1916.
So I salute Mother India and My own Mother as well, on this day the Day of Independence, or rather the Day of Freedom in India.
Soon thereafter the British Raj crumbled, and all the colonies under the British Raj acquired freedom, so that all that was left of the mighty British Empire that had once spanned the world, was simply the little area known as "The British Isles" or U.K. as we know it today. Quite a shrinkage indeed!
But there is another Freedom that needs to be acquired.
The Freedom of the human soul. Freedom from sorrow and misery, freedom from repeated births and deaths into this world, freedom from this ocean of Fear, "The Bhav Saagar".
As the famous Urdu Poet, Jigar (1890–1960), wrote:
"Issee Kaayenaat men ai Jigar, Kabhi inquilaab utthegaa phir
Ke buland ho ke bhi aadmi, abhi kwaahishon ka gulaam hai"
"O Jigar! one day the Voice of Freedom shall rise again in this Universe,
That man, who is the highest of the high, has become the slave of desires!""
Yes, man is the slave of his own desires. One desire ends and another begins. These desires bind man to the world of materialism, and, when he leaves his body, he is born again and again into this same world-- to suffer the pangs of sorrow, suffering and death, for 84,00, 000 lives and deaths. according to Hindu belief. Or until the time he sheds the habit of desire.
Even when man is alive in any birth he is constantly haunted by the grim spectre of sorrow and suffering.
As my Father, HH Shri Bhola Nathji, would say:
"Man does not enjoy life.
For as long as he is living, he is afraid of death so that the joy of living is gone.
And when he is dying, he wishes to live, so the joy of dying is also gone."
So how does he gain Freedom from life and death, both?
" Man becomes free of the sorrows of life and death when he looks upon life as an Order of God that sent him into the world, and Death as another Order of God, which takes him away from the world.
"There is neither life nor death, there is just the Order or the Will of God. And when man bows his head before the Will of God he is freed of the sorrows of life and death, and becomes truly free!"
A child who runs away from his mother falls and cries, even as the dreadful things of the world frighten him. He thinks he has gained freedom from the lap of his mother. But when does his misery end, when does he stop crying?
Only when he has gone back to the lap of his mother again! Then he can challenge all the people and all the creatures that had frightened him when he was free.
So Real Freedom lies, not in running away from God and chasing after the perishable objects of the world, but rather in delivering one's life and death into the hands of God, who will make them both beautiful and free of all fears.
Today I am also reminded of my mother who never celebrated her birthday separately today, saying: "The whole of India is celebrating today!"
I am also reminded of my Father who used to walk with an umbrella in hand, in the rain, walking with the children who marched past for the flag hoisting ceremony in the city, to which all the eminent citizens of the city had been invited.
I can see him even now, with his umbrella in hand, walking with the marching school-children on the Mall Road, to celebrate the Day of Independence of the country into which he been born for the salvation of humanity. The umbrella appeared to be a refuge for humanity.

MY MOTHER - MO

 MY MOTHER - MO

================
By Priya Nath Mehta
===================
Today, August 5, 1967, was the day when my mother,Smt Savitri Devi Mahamateshwari, left this physical world and mingled into the eternity of her eternal self. She had lived with my father, HH Shri Bhola Nathji, for 28 years.
I, and my elder brother, Pran Nath Mehta, called our mother MO out of love. The word "Mom'" was not in use at that time and in India people called their mothers MAA or MATAJI.
From my childhood days I had this premonition that one day I was going to lose my dearest , most beloved Mo. I would follow her around from room to room, in our large house, as if she was going to disappear and I would never find her.
I saw a Hindi Film that made me weep for days. It showed a little child rocking her empty cradle with her late mother's photograph on the wall, singing:
"Maa, pyaari maa
Bhoole na jhoole ke din"
"O Mother, Dearest Mother,
Never shall I forget those days of the cradle"
My father knew everything that was going to happen in the years to come. We all looked upon him as God, as if this knowledge was born with us. He looked after my mother like no husband in the world ever looked after his wife.
But I, being the youngest, was the most affectionate of all towards my mother, and would shut her harmonium closed, if I ever found her singing a sad bhajan or ghazal.
Just before I leff for Harvard University in America, I purchased two sarees for my mother and she said to me:
"Priya, don't love me so much, or I will cry after you are gone!"
The day came when I went to Harvard from London. As the plane rose high in the sky I looked at the airport below and saw my parents standing there. I felt as if I was leaving behind everything and going towards nothing.
The fateful day came at Harvard four years later, when I heard the words of a nurse from Royal Free Hospital, London, say to me: "Mr. Mehta your mother is very very ill! She has acute kidney failure!"
I left behind everything at Harvard. A bridge of helping hands appeared to help me everywhere. All my professors and friends at Harvard were very sympathetic and helpful.
At New York Airport the last flight to London was about to leave but there was a long queue of people ahead of me. Word quickly spread "His mother is ill!" and before I knew it, all the people in the queue moved aside and allowed me to the front, and very soon I was on the flight to London.
When I reached the dismal flat in which my parents and brother lived, I found my mother looking as if she were 80 years old, even though she was only 51 at the time.
My mother embraced me and said: "Priya !You have come! This happiness shall remain with me till the end!" And she closed her eyes just then, forever.
The funeral was carried out By Leverton and Co. Carried on the shoulders of tall Englishmen pall bearers was my mother's coffin. My father too applied his shoulder. We were inside a Hindu Temple where the electric crematorium was also located.
Mr. Leverton tried to take a last picture with his camera of my mother's uncovered face. But the skies were overcast with dark clouds. Just then the clouds parted and the rays of the sun entered the skylight of the Temple and fell straight on my mother's face!
Mr. Leverton said: "It was heavenly light!"
The return to India was filled with sadness and the saddest part was where we consigned her ashes to the Ganges. It was as if I was never going to see my mother again. She had now become a part of the land she loved so much.
As the Ganges carried her ashes away I heard her song come from the waters:
"Prabhu mere sharan teri main aayaa.."
"O Lord! I have taken refuge in Thee..."
I remembered my father's words:
"Everything in this world is perishable except Love."

THIS LIFE IS A TAVERN

 THIS LIFE IS A TAVERN

================================================
FROM THE PARABLES OF MY FATHER, HH SHRI BHOLA NATHJI, A GREAT SPIRITUAL LUMINARY OF OUR TIMES, WHO GAVE PEACE AND BEATITUDE TO COUNTLESS FOLK DURING HIS LIFETIME, AND RELIEVED THEM OF THEIR SORROWS AND SUFFERINGS, AND WHOSE WORDS AND BLESSINGS STILL GO OUT TOWARDS HUMANITY FROM HIS CELESTIAL ABODE.
=================================================
Despite the repeated injunctions, messages and warnings of the many Saviours and Avatars and Holy Men, who came into this world, people have not changed over time. They still continue to cling to the world as if it is their real home, and forget that they have to leave it one day to go to another world. This world is all that matters to them.
To illustrate this maxim, HH Shri Bhola Nathji would often narrate this parable he had composed, to awaken the eyes of humanity.
THE KING AND THE HOLY MAN
-----------------------------------------------
The Holy Man and the Tavern
Shri Nathji was fond of telling the following parable:
A Holy Man approached the palace of a King and hailed the guards:
"Is there any place in this tavern for me? I wish to stay the night!"
"Begone!" said the guards, "this is not a tavern, this is the palace of the King!"
"I see only a tavern!" said the Holy Man "surely it will have a place in it for a traveller
like me?"
The King, who was watching the scene from the palace balcony, heard the Holy Man call his palace a tavern, and he said to the Holy Man.
"O Sage! Why do you call my palace a tavern? Don't you see I live in it?"
"I can see you live in it, O King–that is why I call it a tavern!" replied the Holy Man
"Explain yourself, O Sage!" said the King.
"Listen, therefore, O King!" said the Holy Man "who lived in this palace before you?"
"My father."
"And before him?"
"My grandfather, and my ancestors."
"WilL you remain on this throne forever?
"No! I too shall have to go!"
"Who shall come here after you?"
"My children."
"And after them?"
"My grandchildren and their descendants!"
The Holy man said:
"Listen, therefore, O King! " WHO SAYS THIS IS NOT A TAVERN WHERE SO MANY HAVE COME AND GONE?"
"KAUN KAIHTAA HAI YE MUSAAFIRKHAANA NAHEEN HAIN JAHAAN ITNE AAYE AUR AAKAR CHALE GAYE!"

FORGET THOU ALL BUT NEVER FORGET THIS!

 FORGET THOU ALL BUT NEVER FORGET THIS!

===============================================
From the pen of my Father, His Holiness, Shri Bhola Nathji, who was a Great Spiritual Luminary of our times, and who gave Peace and Beatitude to Countless Folk during his life-time and in whom people experienced God,and whose Blessings still Help and Comfort us from his Celestial Abode!
=================================================
Man must never forget two things in life-- the first is the Existence of God and the second is the Existence of Death.
You have to remember God all the time and keep Him in your heart, with each and every breath, so that you may be freed of all your fears and worries, of this life and the next.
He is the Host in whose house you are living like Guests, who have to leave the house one day, and must ensure where they have to go.
And you have to remember Death, because it is a CERTAINTY, which people try to ignore. While people run after the uncertain things of the world they ignore that which MUST come!
All the plans and ambitions and desires, wealth and prosperity of man are reduced to Dust by Death in fraction of a second -- which may come at anytime.
God has let you know of the time of your Birth, but He has deliberately hidden from you the time of your Death, so that you may know that -- Death is the Next Moment.
And so that you may make haste to establish a relationship with God before it comes, suddenly, catching you unawares.
When a Yakshya, a celestial being, asked Yudhistra the King of Hastinapur and Indraparatha:
"What is the most amazing thing in the world?"
Yudhistra, who was the wisest of men, replied:
"The most amazing thing in the world is that people die before us every day, but no one really believes in his own death!"
People are constantly busy searching for wealth, status and prosperity, even some so-called pseudo holy men are seeking name and fame and followers, and desiring they be worshipped even after they are gone.
While in their heart of hearts everybody knows that their pride and desire for praise and worship will be crushed by Death into insignificance-- and whether they will be worshipped after Death or go into the endless cycle of births and deaths is a question even they cannot answer.
Therefore it is better for everyone to set aside their egos and to say: "ALL GLORY UNTO HIM ALONE!"

GRATITUDE VERSUS INGRATITUDE TO GOD

 GRATITUDE VERSUS INGRATITUDE TO GOD

================================================
From the thoughts of my father,His Holiness Shri Bhola Nathji, a Great Spiritual Luminary of our times who gave peace and beatitude to countless folk during his lifetime, relieving them of their sorrows and sufferings and in whom people saw God personified as Love and Peace.
================================================
Man has got into the habit of complaining to God for the things God did not give Him, but always forgets to thank Him for the bountiful gifts He has given. Man's ingratitude always outweighs his gratitude.
God gives more and more to the man with gratitude and nothing to the man with only ingratitude in his heart.
HH Shri Bhola Nathji often narrated this parable of the two guests of the king.
The king served each of them with ten dishes of delicious food,
Unfortunately his cook forgot to put salt in one of the dishes, the lentils, or daal.
When the guests reached the town they were surrounded by friends and strangers eager to know what they had been given to eat by the king.
The first said: "What a dreadful meal it was. There was no salt in the daal!"
He said nothing about the nine other delicious foods that were served.
And the second guest said to the people
: "O there were so many delicious foods, it is impossible to narrate how tasty and delicious the food was, the best I ever ate!"
News reached the ears of the king about what the two guests had been saying.
The King thereupon wrote a letter to each of the guests.
To the first, who had complained, he said:
"My most honored guest! You are more than an honorable guest--because I could not please you with my food! Unfortunately the cook forgot to put salt in the daal. I am so sorry for it.
"But I shall not trouble you to come to my house again for dinner, because in my house salt is often forgotten in the daal!"
The door of the king was closed forever on the first ungrateful guest.
To the second guest the king wrote:
" My Dear honourable guest! Thank you for praising my food before the public despite the fact that there was no salt in the daal.
" But please keep coming to my house-- and the next time there will be salt in the daal as well!"
