ARE YOU RICH OR POOR?

There was a Maharaja and his servant who both came together to see HH Shri Nathji frequently. While the Maharaja was obviously a very rich person, his servant was so poor that even the one coat he wore was torn at the elbows.
As both bowed before HH Shri Nathji asking for his blessings, Shri Nathji in his un-assumed humility, would embrace both of them, one by one.
This caused acute embarrassment to the Maharaja as well as his servant. It embarrassed the Maharaja to see HH Shri Nathji embrace his servant before him, and it embarrassed the servant to be embraced before his master, the Maharaja.
One day the Maharaja said to HH Shri Nathji:
"Sire! Due to your benedictions, I am doing quite well in life and the earning from my State is about 1 crore rupees, which is about ten million rupees. But I seek your blessings so that I may be able to make 2 crores, 20 million rupees!"
Shri Nathji said: "Maharaja! How many pieces of bread do you eat each day ?"
The Maharaja was a bit taken aback but said:
"O Sire! I take two pieces of bread with each meal!"
And Shri Nathji said:
"You are earning 1 crore from your State and all you can eat are two pieces of bread. Tell me if your earnings double, if you earn 2 crores, then will you eat four pieces of bread per day, in other words will you double the food you take, if your income is doubled?"
"No, Sire!" said the Maharaja, "that would be too much for my digestive system and would upset my stomach!"
Shri Nathji continued:
"Even if you acquired all the wealth in the world you would still be able to eat only two pieces of bread as you are doing now!
"So why not be content with what you already possess rather than lose your peace of mind for more!"
Shri Nathji quoted a Persian Verse:
"Insaan ke shikman seri yak naan ast
Vaz shaamo sahar hirso havas naalaan ast"
"Man whose stomach is filled only with one piece of bread,
Cries day and night in greed, for more and more wealth."
In a solitary moment, HH Shri Nathji asked the servant how much salary the Maharaja paid him and the servant said:
"Sire, only 40 rupees per month!"
And Shri Nathji added: "DId you ever ask him for 80 rupees per month? To double your salary?"
The servant said: "No, Sire, never! Firstly, I knew he would never double my salary and, secondly, I have become so used to living with this small earning that I am content and have given up the desire for more!"
And Shri Nathji said to him:
"O Faithful Servant of the Maharaja! I must congratulate you on your loyalty to your master. But at the same time let me tell you that you are the Real Maharaja, and the Maharaja is your servant!
"This is because you are content with what you have, whereas your Maharaja is always discontent and hankering after more and has lost his most precious wealth --- his peace of mind!
"He who possesses the wealth of contentment is the richest man in the world!"
