LOVER OF THE POOR - MY ELDER BROTHER

My elder brother is an intensely spiritual person. One can feel the spiritual light emanating from him when one comes before him. Although he has the world's knowledge of religion and science at his finger tips, yet he has only one simple message to give those who come to him and that is:
"Help the poor! Feed the poor!"
He was often seen stopping the car to call little child beggars in the streets to give them some money, or to purchase whatever newspapers or flowers they sold on the streets.
He would say:
"The poor are like helpless children. They have no money to buy medicines to save themselves from grave illnesses and simply die on the streets from their diseases. They sleep on empty stomachs and sleep in the streets under the open skies, shivering in the cold in the winters, and dying of heat in the summers..."
Frequently tears would flow from his eyes when he narrated the plight of the poor. And his message was simple:
"If you want God to help you in your troubles, then help and love the poor, these people in rags who lift off food from the garbage and eat whatever they can, these children whose fate has condemned them to this hard life, who are critically ill at every stage of life.
"Who live in the streets and die of old age on the streets if they live to grow up to be old...watch these old poor people lifting heavy weights and pulling carts loaded with sacks to earn a pittance, who simply cough and cough till they die...for whom the good life of the rich is taboo, they have so gotten used to their poverty that they do not even envy the rich who throw away more food and waste more money than they need to...
"If you cannot help them, then at least have genuine pity for them and maybe one day your conscience will wake up and you will grow to love them and help them...thank God He has not given you their poverty in life..but He can, if He so Wills...in this birth or the next.. so each time you enjoy yourselves think of the starving poor.. God has not given you so much in life merely to enjoy yourselves, He wants you to help others in need so that you may make your lives successful .."
"It is not enough to say 'why is there so much misery in the world?' You must ask yourselves :what did you do to alleviate that misery?
"If God has created an imperfect world, it is only so that you can make it more perfect...."
There was a time when my brother took a poor carpenter in rags into a fancy restaurant to have lunch with him.
The waiter took his order for lunch for two, but the manager of the restaurant objected to the presence of the poor man in rags in his restaurant and said it would create a "bad impression on the public and ruin their reputation as a respectable restaurant catering to respectable people..."
My brother immediately cancelled the order and got up from his chair and went to the manager and said these words to him before he left the restaurant along with his companion, the poor carpenter in rags:
My brother said to the manager with some anger:
"This waiter should have been the manager of the restaurant and you should have been a waiter here!"
