THE WORTH OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS

"THE STRAW HUT OF SHEIKH SAADI"
My Father, HH Shri Bhola Nathji (1902-1992) was a great spiritual luminary of his time, with a very simple philosophy of life. Life was a temporary sojourn upon earth, and therefore one must use it to love and help his fellowmen and to find God. It was not meant to be wasted in the quest for material possessions all of which one left behind on earth in death. Contentment was man's greatest wealth and brought peace to the mind of man in this temporary sojourn on earth.
He used to narrate the legend of Sheikh Saadi a famous Persian poet, (1210 -1291) A.D.,whose verses had made him so famous that all the Kings and Sultans of His time had made him an honored Court Poet, and there was no dearth of wealth and gifts being bestowed upon him.
One day a traveller came to the town of Sheikh Saadi and wished to pay his respects to the famed poet. He was new to the town and asked for directions to the house of Sheikh Saadi.
Everyone in the town knew Sheikh Saadi and within minutes the traveller was standing outside the house of the famous poet, Sheikh Saadi.
What he saw shocked him beyond measure! The house of Sheikh Saadi was but a hut of straw and grass! How could such a poet reputed to be in possession of such great wealth live in such a humble dwelling meant for the poor!!
He called out from outside the open door of the hut to Sheikh Saadi, saying in Persian:
"Khaanaye Saadi choon deedam, ba yak mushte khaar o khas ast!"
"I saw the house of Saadi and it was but a handful of straw and grass!"
And the voice of Sheikh Saadi rang out from inside the house:
"Caaravaane raihravaan raa een qadar manzil bas ast!"
"For the Caravan of life that moves on, this much of a resting place is enough!"
