An incident from the life of my grandfather, HH Shri Babaji Maharaj (1867-1940), who was the father of HH Shri Bhola Nathji (1902-1992), my father.
Shri Babaji Maharaj was a millionaire who gave away all his wealth to
the poor and took to the spiritual path. Multitudes began to throng to
him to find peace and beatitude and a release from their sorrows and
sufferings. He loved everybody and everybody loved him. He was brave and
fearless from the strength that he derived from God.
==================================================
There was a time when HH Shri Babaji went to listen to the sermon of a very popular and renowned spiritual leader of his time belonging to a particular faith and sect.
Though being greatly spiritually advanced himself, HH Shri Babaji was so humble that he would not hesitate to listen to any other persons speaking on spiritual subjects, and would content himself sitting silently amongst the audience.
The man gave a very loud and long speech, at the end of which he left the hall and went outside in the verandah to get some fresh air.
Shri Babaji Maharaj went up to him and asked him:
"Sir! Are you all right? You appear to be ill!"
The spiritual leader replied with some vexation:
"I would rather be left alone! I have a severe headache!"
Shri Babaji however continued: " You got a headache while taking the name of God?"
At this the spiritual leader flared up: "What! How dare you insult me!"
Shri Babaji said: "It was certainly not my intention to insult you, Sir, but I believe that the name of God is the panacea for all ills and that is what your religion also teaches! So how could you possibly have got a headache from taking the name of God!"
The spiritual leader got angrier and angrier, until he appeared to have lost control over himself.
"How dare you teach me what is in my own religion!!"
Very soon Babaji found himself surrounded by a group of the man's followers who began to manhandle Shri Babaji and to push him away.
As Shri Babaji continued to speak, the spiritual leader said to him:
"Come to your senses! Man! You are alone and we are so many!"
Shri Babaji Maharaj was unfazed and said with equal boldness:
"Sir, It is not I who am alone! It is YOU who are alone!"
At this the spiritual leader appeared to be astonished, and calmed down even as he saw the countenance of Babaji glowing with a spiritual light.
"How am I alone! " he said, "I have so many men with me!"
Shri Babaji Maharaj said to him:
"You are alone because you have divorced yourself from Truth and from God. I am not alone because God is with me!"
The spiritual leader appeared to awaken from a dream. His ego melted, and soon enough he fell down at Shri Babaji's feet and said:
"Sire! Maharaj! You are so right! I had forgotten God when I lost my temper in my ego! Thank you for bringing me back to Him! He had sent you to teach me this important lesson in life!"
We are never really alone in life because God is with us like the invisible air. But we become alone when we divorce ourselves from Truth and therefore from God. Truly he is alone who has forgotten the presence of God with him and gone on the wrong path in life.
