Later we learnt from the News on TV that the earthquake was of Richter Scale 7.5 which is well past the danger zone of 5.5. It hit all of Northern India. New Delhi was so badly shaken that people stayed out in the streets for hours, afraid of entering the very buildings in which they worked.
Every earthquake is a disaster, and being saved from every earthquake is a miracle.
My Father, HH Shri Bhola Nathji (1902-1992) who was a Great Spiritual Luminary of his time used to say:
"I don't think science has been able to invent an instrument which can stop an earthquake! An earthquake belittles the greatness of man and his knowledge and wealth and his plans in life and reduces them all to a ZERO in a second.
"It reminds man once again to turn his attention off from the world for a while and turn it towards the Creator of the World, God, who alone can start and stop an earthquake in a trice!"
In the 1930's there was a time when HH Shri Nathji visited an ailing atheist,who was the Vice Chancellor of Lucknow University.
Shri Nathji wished to bless him. But apparently the man did not wish to be "blessed" by a man of God since he was an atheist and also a proud man, and he made some sarcastic comments to that effect.
In later days a terrible earthquake hit the city and a devotee of HH Shri Nathji came to him and said:
"Your Holiness! Do you know what happened to that haughty Vice Chancellor when the earthquake hit his house? He ran out of the house crying out loud:
"Good God!"
HH Shri Nathji said: "The Good God was within him all the time, but it took the rocking of an earthquake to bring him out!"
