 THE HIDDEN THIRST WITHIN

You are thirsty. It is a cold winter night. The thirst is only slight so you do not get out of your quilt to satiate it.

Then the thirst becomes greater and you remove your quilt and think about walking all the way to the kitchen for a glass of water.

But you are still undecided.

Then comes a time when the thirst becomes so intense that you simply throw aside your quilt and rush to the kitchen and drink till your thirst is quenched. This is intense desire which must find fulfillment.

Similarly there is a hidden thirst for God within the human soul. It is only when it becomes intense that he finds God.

The Thirst for God becomes intense only when man is driven there by either sorrows or genuine devotion (which is very rare.)

Shri Nathji often used to say.

"You are thirsty, you want water. What is

the use my speaking to you about water

without giving you what you want? I have

brought water to satiate your thirst. And a

principle is established: if it quenches your

thirst, then surely the water I have brought,

will quench the thirst of everyone in the

whole world!"

Shri Nathji would often say that there was

the thirst - hidden or revealed - for God,

within the depths of the human soul.

The moment God came before the human soul, it

recognized its goal! But the recognition only

came to souls that were genuinely thirsty.

It was the grace of Shri Nathji that he

granted such a recognition. The thirst could

only be satiated by God. And Shri Nathji

was carrying God within him.

That was why the realization was almost

instantaneous and spontaneous when a

genuinely thirsty soul came before Shri

Nathji.

What appeared to the world as a conversion,

was, in fact, this inner recognition - the

individual soul recognizing the Universal

Soul.
