"You know what mercy is. You pity your fallen state and you pity the fallen states of others.
When you see a beggar you drop into his bowl a penny from your riches.
The beggar does nothing for you, yet if you had given him nothing it would have pained you.
It is not you who give but your mercy that forces you to give.
You stay within the limits of your selfishness and seldom step out.
Then from whence came this mercy that compels you to do what you would not do normally? Is it really yours? Who sent it? Whose is it?
If through a hole in your door a ray of light peeps in, you cannot claim that the light is the door’s, nor can you say it belongs to your house.
It came from outside.
Go, then, outside, and see the source from whence it came to scatter the darkness of your house, and you will see the sun.
Mercy spent on others will one day bring you that Divine Mercy which will enable you to understand God.
